Ring stuck on a swollen finger? Here’s what to try
Try these two methods first. Still stuck? We cut rings off for A$35.
1. Ice water, hand up high
If your finger is injured, numb, blue or pale, or very painful, seek urgent medical help before trying these methods.
- Put the finger in a cup of ice water and hold it above your head for about 10 minutes.
- Add soap or a little oil, then twist the ring gently off. Don’t force it.

2. The string method
- Wrap dental floss snugly round the finger, coils touching, from the fingertip side of the knuckle down to the ring.
- Tuck the end nearest the ring under it, so it comes out on the hand side.
- Unwind that end towards your fingertip. The ring slides off over the floss.
Stop if it hurts. If the ring won’t move, unwind all the floss straight away.
