Custom-made jewellery starts with a conversation about what you want to wear, and ends with a piece designed and drawn at our Frankston workshop, cast by a specialist casting house, then set and finished back at our bench. No off-the-shelf design book and no white-label pieces.

The process

From conversation to finished piece

Four stages, each one a checkpoint you review and approve before we move on. Nothing is committed to metal until you have held a physical copy of the design in your hand.

  1. A designer and client reviewing ring designs at a consultation

    Consultation

We sit down with you at the Frankston workshop, or by video call if you are interstate, and listen for the ring behind the brief. You leave with a written brief: design direction, metal, stone parameters and budget.

  2. 3D CAD model of a ring shown from three angles

    CAD design

The $500 design fee starts this stage. The sketch is rebuilt as a 3D CAD model and rendered from every angle, and the fee comes off the total price of your piece.

  3. Resin 3D printed ring models on the print bed

    3D print

The design fee also covers a 3D print, an exact physical copy you can hold and try on. With the model built we know the metal weights and diamond dimensions, so we can give you the exact total cost before anything is made.

  4. Goldsmith working metal at the bench

    Production

A specialist casting house casts the ring in your chosen metal. Back at our workshop we set the stones under magnification and hand-finish the piece. It is inspected, weighed and photographed before collection.

Sketching, casting, stone setting and finishing each have their own checkpoints inside those four stages. Read the seven-stage walk-through for the full detail.

What we make

Engagement rings are the most common commission through our bench — they have their own dedicated page covering styles, stones and the design process — followed by matching wedding bands and anniversary pieces.

  • Rings

Centre-stone work, three-stone settings, halo designs, vintage-inspired filigree, hidden halos, knife-edge bands and bespoke crown profiles.

  • Pendants & necklaces

Solitaires, halo pendants, station necklaces, religious and initial pieces.

  • Earrings

    Studs, hoops, drops and chandeliers.

  • Bracelets

Plain bangles, tennis bracelets and stone-set cuffs.

  • Men's pieces

Signet rings, cufflinks and wedding bands.

  • Bridal sets

Engagement ring plus matching band, designed as a coordinated pair from the same bench drawing so the contours sit flush.

We work with both natural and lab grown diamonds — sourced from our supplier network or matched to a stone you bring in — and across the full range of coloured gemstones: sapphires, emeralds, rubies, tanzanites, aquamarines, opals and pearls. We also take on remount commissions where you supply the stones and we design the setting around them, a natural progression for inherited diamonds and heirloom centre stones whose original setting is no longer wearable. That work is closely related to our jewellery remodelling service — same bench, same design conversation, slightly different starting materials.

Metals we work with

The choice depends on the design and the look you are after. Mixed-metal pieces — a yellow gold band with a platinum crown, for example — are also possible and we will quote them on request.

  • Gold

    9kt · 14kt · 18kt

Yellow, white and rose. 18kt is the standard for engagement rings — a good balance of colour and hardness. 14kt is a harder-wearing middle option, and 9kt suits cost-effective wedding bands and signets.

  • Platinum

    PT950

Platinum is naturally white. We use Pt950 alloyed with 5% cobalt; tell us about any known metal allergy so we can discuss an appropriate alloy. Its density gives it a substantial feel, and the setting still needs care and condition checks.

  • Silver

    Sterling 925

Used for fashion pieces, signets and initial gifts where the brief calls for a softer metal and a lower price point.

  • Continuum Sterling Silver

    Silver · palladium alloy

Significantly stronger than standard 925 silver, with hardness approaching some gold alloys, giving it durability closer to gold jewellery than traditional sterling silver. Useful for men who want the strength and white colour of 9kt white gold on a heavy piece without the 9kt price.

White gold is rhodium plated for its bright finish. Platinum and yellow gold are cast in their final colour and need no plating.

What it costs

Price scales with three things: the metal (weight × purity × current spot price), the centre stone, and the complexity of the bench work. We quote every commission individually after the bench drawing is settled and the centre stone is selected, so you know the figure before any material is committed.

To start a project

$500

design fee

The design fee covers a 3D design and a 3D print of your piece. With the model built, the metal weights and diamond dimensions are known, so we can tell you the exact total cost of the piece before anything is made.

The $500 then comes off the total price.

  • Entry tier

Practical signet bands, plain stackers, name pendants and modest stone-set pieces, at accessible everyday-jewellery price points.

  • Mid tier

The bulk of our engagement-ring commissions: an 18kt white gold solitaire around a well-chosen lab grown or modest natural centre stone, halo and three-stone designs, and substantial gemstone rings.

  • Signature tier

The heirloom commissions: high-purity platinum, premium natural centre stones, or significant coloured gem cases. Pieces meant to outlive the person who commissioned them.

Browse our diamond inventory to see live, transparent pricing on natural and lab grown stones across every shape and grade. That is the largest variable in any centre-stone commission, and seeing real prices is the fastest way to start a budget conversation.

How to start

The first conversation is a free design consultation at the Frankston workshop. Frankston handles all services, including repairs, valuations, engraving, remodelling, engagement rings and wedding rings. Email us before visiting Collins Street for engagement-ring and wedding-ring consultations. Please wait for our email confirmation before coming in.

Bring whatever you have — Pinterest boards, photographs of pieces you love, sketches, an existing ring you would like to reference, a centre stone you already own — and a sense of the budget you are working with.

The consultation covers what is technically possible, what the metal and stone choices imply, and the rough cost envelope for the brief you have described. Bring a proposal date, anniversary or milestone with you and we will tell you straight whether the design and the timeline fit together before any money changes hands.

When you are ready to go ahead, the $500 design fee starts the project. It covers the 3D design and 3D print, and it comes off the total price. 80% deposit at CAD sign-off. The remaining 20% is due on completion or collection. The design fee and custom work can't be cancelled or refunded for change of mind.
