You can engrave almost anything that means something to you inside or outside a ring — initials, your wedding date, a few words, map coordinates, one of you in your own handwriting, even a fingerprint. At Anny's we do it in-house with a laser, so it's permanent and precise — starts from A$95, usually ready in 1–2 business days — on rings we made, and on rings you bring in from elsewhere. Keep it short: a standard band comfortably holds around 20–30 characters, depending on width and font. Gold, platinum and silver engrave crisply and can be polished back and re-engraved later; our partner-made men's bands include titanium and tantalum, which can be laser-engraved; confirm sizing and engraving suitability before ordering. Titanium rings can't be resized. We don't make or sell tungsten, though we can laser-mark a tungsten band you bring in.
Almost anything meaningful, as long as it fits the band. Here are the ideas people reach for most:
A soundwave of your vows or a favourite song is a newer idea some couples love — ask us whether it'll work on your ring, because it depends on the piece.
There's no hard rule — engraving is personal, and that's the point. Traditionally, a short message runs from one partner to the other, hidden inside the band: initials and the wedding date, or a few words meant only for the wearer. Modern couples engrave whatever they like, on either ring, sometimes matching the two bands with halves of one phrase.
The gentle guidance we give across the counter: keep it timeless. Initials, a date, or a line you'll still love in thirty years age better than an in-joke or a trend. If the engraving is a surprise, double-check the spelling, the date and the ring size before we mark it — a laser cut is permanent, so it's worth getting right the first time. And the golden rule: keep it short — the fewer characters, the cleaner it reads and wears inside a band.
The two methods reach the same place by different roads. Hand engraving is cut by hand with a fine tool called a graver — slow, artisan, with a warm hand-cut character, but limited to what a human hand can carve. Laser engraving is computer-guided: it's precise, repeatable, and it can reproduce things a hand can't — your exact handwriting, a fingerprint, a fine logo or motif.
Anny's engraves with a laser for exactly that reason. When the whole point is to capture something personal — the way you write, the print of a finger — you want it reproduced faithfully, not interpreted. Laser also marks harder metals that hand tools simply can't cut (more on that below). Anny's is laser-only — we don't offer hand engraving.
| Laser engraving (what Anny's uses) | Hand engraving | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's done | Computer-guided laser marks the metal | Cut by hand with a graver |
| Precision | Exact and repeatable | Unique, hand-cut character |
| Reproduces handwriting / a fingerprint | Yes — faithfully | No — can't replicate fine detail the same way |
| Works on hard metals (titanium, tungsten) | Yes | No |
| Best for | Personal, exact, permanent marks | Decorative, artisan hand-cut work |
Most engraving goes inside the band — private, tucked against the skin, and protected from the knocks of daily wear. That's where a name, a date or a fingerprint belongs: a message just for the two of you, kept crisp because the inside of a ring sees far less abrasion than the outside.
Outside engraving is a design choice rather than a hidden message — a visible pattern, a motif, or lettering that shows. It can look wonderful, but it needs a wider, flatter surface to sit on, and it's more exposed to everyday wear, so fine detail softens faster than it would inside. A very fine font on a narrow band can also be hard to read; when you bring the ring in, we'll size the lettering to the band so it stays legible. For a wider canvas to work with, a curved or shaped wedding band gives an engraver more room than a slim court band.
Yes. We regularly laser-engrave rings that weren't bought from Anny's — it's the same open-door approach we take to resizing and repairing other jewellers' pieces. Bring the ring to the Frankston workshop, tell us what you'd like, and we'll tell you what the metal and the band width will take.
The one thing worth checking first is the metal. A gold or platinum ring may be suitable for engraving or later work after inspection; a tungsten or titanium band can be laser-marked, but hand engraving and removing the engraving are generally unsuitable. Titanium rings can't be resized. Check sizing before engraving (see what metals engrave well, below). So if you're not sure what your ring is made of, that's the first thing we'll establish — and we'll give you a straight answer about what is possible before anything is marked.
Soft, precious metals engrave best. Gold and platinum both sit under about 5 on the Mohs hardness scale, so they take a crisp, clean cut and can be re-worked later. The harder the metal, the harder it is to engrave, resize or undo: titanium sits around 6, and tungsten carbide around 9 — the top of the scale bar diamond itself — which is why a steel graver (about 7 on the same scale) can't even cut it, and only a laser will mark it.
That hardness is also what decides whether an engraving can be changed later. On gold, platinum or silver, an engraving isn't a life sentence: because engraving is simply metal removed, a jeweller can polish the surface level again and re-engrave a new message, and it usually doesn't change the ring's size unless the original cut was very deep. Names change, dates get added, a worn message gets refreshed — all normal. Engraving in tungsten, ceramic or titanium is near-impossible to polish out without damaging the ring, so on those metals treat an engraving as permanent from the start.
For the rings we make, Anny's works in gold (9ct, 14ct and 18ct), platinum and silver — each can be assessed for engraving, resizing and future rework, with outcomes depending on condition and construction (see 9ct vs 18ct gold for how the gold purities compare). Our men's wedding bands are partner-made. The catalogue offers 9kt and 18kt gold, platinum 950 and 960, silver, titanium, tantalum, black zirconium and mixed-metal designs, including gold with Damascus steel. Confirm the chosen design's sizing and engraving options before ordering. Titanium rings can't be resized. The one metal we don't make or sell is tungsten — though if you bring a tungsten band in, we can usually still laser-mark it, knowing it cannot usually be resized or have its engraving removed.
| Metal | Hardness (Mohs) | Engraves | Can be resized | Engraving can be removed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold (9–18ct) | Under ~5 | Yes — crisp | Yes | Yes |
| Platinum | Under ~5 | Yes — crisp | Yes | Yes |
| Silver | Under ~5 | Yes — crisp | Yes | Yes |
| Titanium | ~6 | Laser only | Titanium rings can't be resized. | No |
| Tungsten carbide | ~9 | Laser only | No | No |
Anny's works in gold, platinum and silver. Our men's catalogue also includes partner-made titanium, tantalum and black zirconium bands. Titanium rings can't be resized. Confirm sizing and engraving suitability for the chosen design. We don't make or sell tungsten (though we can laser-mark a tungsten band you bring in).
Engraving starts from A$95, and it's usually ready in 1–2 business days. It's in-house work on our own laser, so your ring never leaves the workshop — simple text is quick, and a fingerprint or handwriting reproduction takes only a little more setup.
The easiest way to get started is to bring the ring to the Frankston workshop — walk-ins are welcome — or Email us, and we'll show you what's possible. Browse Anny's wedding rings or read about how a custom ring is made if you're starting from scratch. You Imagine. We Create.
Yes — that's exactly what laser engraving does best. We reproduce your real handwriting (a word, a signature) or a fingerprint faithfully onto the ring, because the laser follows a scan of the original rather than a jeweller re-drawing it by hand.
As a rough guide, a standard band comfortably holds around 20–30 characters including spaces, depending on the band's width and the font — narrower bands fit fewer. Tell us the exact ring and message and we'll confirm what fits before we mark it.
Yes — engraving usually goes inside the band, away from the setting, so a ring with a diamond or gemstone already set is no problem. The laser is precise and low-impact, so it marks the band without disturbing the stones.

The engraving service, our laser, our in-house workshop and the metals we work in are Anny's own — not outside statistics. The general points about how metals engrave and wear — gold and platinum versus tungsten and titanium — come from the Mohs hardness scale and standard bench practice, which any jeweller will tell you the same way. For the exact character limit for your ring — or anything else — just ask us; you'll always get a straight answer across the counter.
